On the night of April 14, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln attended a performance of "Our American Cousin" at Ford's Theater. During the performance Lincoln was shot by the actor John Wilkes Booth, a confederate sympathizer. President Lincoln died at 7:22 the next morning in a house across the street from the theater. He never had a chance to "bind the nations wounds" after the war.
